Tier 2 of SSC CGL Exams 2022

If you are intent on a job in one of the Ministries of India or the Government of India departments, you must be well-versed with the Staff Selection Commission (SSC) exams. The SSC CGL (Combined Graduate Level) exams are held every year and applicants have to clear all three tiers in the exam. Tier 1 of the SSC CGL exams involves answering multiple-choice questions on subjects like Reasoning, General Awareness, Quantitative Aptitude, and General English.

After you pass Tier 1, you will have one month of preparation time to attempt the Tier 2 exams. The Tier 2 exams also have a multiple-choice question format. However, the syllabus and subjects for Tier 2 are different.

  • Quantitative Abilities – 200 marks/100 questions (compulsory for all)
  • English Language & Comprehension – 200 marks/200 questions (compulsory for all)
  • Statistics – 200 marks/100 questions (only for candidates who wish to apply for the post of Statistical Investigator Gr. II & Compiler)

All these examinations are held over a 2-hour time period. Let’s have a look at what each of these subjects entails:

Paper 1. Quantitative Abilities

Designed to test the number sense of each candidate, the multiple-choice questions in this paper will focus on the ability to use numbers in the right manner. Primarily, the application of computation with respect to whole numbers, fractions, and decimals will be tested. Other questions will be based on percentage ratio and proportion, square roots, profit and interest, averages, discounts, partnership business, time and distance/work, and mixture and allegation. You will be tested on basic algebraic identities of school algebra as well as geometry and trigonometry. There will be a section on bar diagrams and pie charts as well.

Paper 2. English Language and Comprehension

The knowledge of the English language will be tested in this paper. These questions are designed to put applicants through the hoops when it comes to understanding English and answering basic types of spot errors, fill-in-the-blanks, synonym/antonym, idioms, and phrases types of questions. Applicants will also have a comprehension section wherein they will have to answer questions pertaining to the close passage and comprehension passage, shuffling of sentence parts/sentences in the passage, and conversion into the direct and indirect narration. Furthermore, applicants will be tested on grammar with questions like active/passive voice of verbs, and improvement of sentences.

Paper 3. Statistics

This paper is compulsory only for those hoping to apply for jobs like Investigator Grade-II, Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation & Compiler in RGI. In this paper, applicants will be tested on specific segments like collection, classification, and presentation of statistical data, measures of central tendency and dispersion, moments, skewness and kurtosis, correlation and regression, probability theory, sampling theory, random variable and probability distributions, statistical inferences, and more.

It is important to note that Paper 1 (Quantitative Abilities) will be based on the 10th standard level, Paper 2 (English) will be based on the 10+2 level while Paper 3 (Statistics) will test students at the Graduation level.

After Tier 2, the next and last level of your journey is Tier 3, which includes a personal interview and skill test. Study hard and prepare well!
