5 Best Fast Bowling Tips

Let’s go through each of these and provide a bit more info that you can use to get started!

  1. Make Sure You’re Using the Correct Grip

When first starting out as a fast bowler, make sure you’re using the proper grip! Because the grip controls how the ball leaves our hand, this is one of the most important aspects of fast bowling. As a result, it has a significant impact on our delivery accuracy.

A fast bowler can employ a variety of grips. They usually choose which one to use based on what they want to do with the ball. The basic grip, on the other hand, is the one that all bowlers should start with, and it’s thankfully very simple!

The basic fast bowling grip requires you to place your index and middle fingers on either side of the seam. The seam should run parallel to both of these fingers. Your thumb is used for support underneath the ball, and it is usually placed on the seam or slightly to the side of it. Your ring and little fingers are usually bent and used for support on the outside of the ball. If you followed these instructions exactly, you should be holding the ball in the manner depicted in the image below.

  1. Develop A Repeatable and Smooth Run Up

The run-up is one of the most important aspects of your bowling action. Getting it right can help you bowl faster and more accurately, so it’s definitely worth paying attention to!

The run-up is where we build up all of the momenta that will propel the ball towards the batsman. Ideally, we want to transfer as much of this momentum into the ball as possible!

  1. Learn To Swing the Ball

As you approach the crease to deliver the ball, you should have gained some speed. It is not necessary to sprint to the wicket, but most bowlers typically reach 60-70 percent of their top running speed. It is usually describe the ideal approach speed as “a brisk jog.”

Make your run-up as short as possible. Run-ups are typically measured in paces, with 10-25 being the ideal number for a fast bowler’s run-up. It’s advised you not to make it any longer than 25 words! This can be a huge energy waste. The length of your run up can be anywhere within that range as long as you can build up the necessary momentum within 10-25 paces.

A fast bowler can achieve three types of swings: outswing, inswing, and reverse swing. Some bowlers have a natural ability to produce certain types of swings, whereas others must practice the skill much more diligently. Generally players don’t struggle to get inswing on the ball during thier cricket career; it just seems to happen naturally as a result of the action! However, they have difficulty getting the ball to outswing away from right-handers! Fortunately, all bowlers can learn to swing the ball in different directions!

  1. Work On Improving Your Bowling Speed

If you’re a fast bowler looking to improve and become more dangerous, you should definitely try to add some speed to your deliveries. This is especially true if you are a young bowler who is still growing and getting stronger! Bowling at faster speeds forces batsmen to make faster decisions, which can help you intimidate them and put them on the back foot. Being a little frightening as a fast bowler is never a bad thing!

One of the favorite ways to improve your speed is to use your front arm more effectively! Most fast bowlers will raise their front arm towards their head as they enter their delivery stride, as shown in the photo below. The bowler then pulls down their front arm to begin delivering the ball with their bowling arm. If you can train yourself to pull your front arm down towards the ground more forcefully, your bowling arm will rotate much faster! This causes the ball to leave your hand at a faster rate.

  1. Develop A Great Yorker

Fast bowlers must be able to bowl Yorkers reliably and accurately in modern cricket in order to surprise batsmen and limit their scoring. If you’re unfamiliar with the term “yorker,” it’s a quick delivery that pitches right on the batsman’s crease, close to their feet. The zone where fast bowlers should aim to land their yorker delivery is highlighted in red in the image below!

Yorkers are extremely important when playing 20 and 50-over cricket because batsmen will be trying to play much more aggressively. The yorker makes it difficult for batsmen to play attacking shots because it makes contact with the ground as well as the batsman. This makes it nearly impossible for a batsman to get underneath a well-directed yorker and hit it for four or six runs!

The best way to practice bowling the yorker is to get a set of stumps and just bowl and bowl and bowl. You don’t even need a batsman to practice it! Just concentrate on getting the ball to pitch close to the stumps, where the batsman’s feet would be. It’s advised that when practicing yorker, you should place a few cones along the line of the batsman’s crease so that there is something to aim at. Moreover you can put one cone on a leg stump line, one on a middle stump line, and one wide outside the off stump so that you can practice different moves. It’s sometimes better to bowl a wide yorker than one on the batsman’s pads!
